aChurch4Me?: Advent Activity for Inner Peace

Based on a writing from MCC’s own Rev. Justin Tanis, 2001 Hopes of peace, comfort, and joy fill the Advent skies. Nietzche says “You must carry the chaos within you in order to give birth to the dancing star.”

The star in the East that led people long ago to the Christ Child, continues to lure us today. As we draw closer to the birth of Christ within us, we will realize the awesome responsibility we hold to carry peace with us and thus bring peace and justice to the world. Suggestions for touching peace within us so that we can become the presence of Christ for ourselves and others:

  1. How can you spend time this pre-Christmas season transforming the chaos in your life to give yourself new birth? (Examples: Start a new routine of lighting a candle to relax for a few minutes or set aside 10 minutes for silence each day or clean out the clutter from one closet or room.)
  2. Select one activity that you generally engage in during the Christmas season and make an intentional decision to change in order to bring yourself and the world more peace. (Example: If you are a notorious shopper, maybe you can trim your spending; if you bake cookies for dozens, maybe you can just send a few cookies and more prayers.)
  3. Think of one person, not a friend or a family member, that you can do something meaningful for during the holiday season. Now do it. Try to be anonymous. (This is after all, the beginning of peace on earth. “Pay it forward”)

Shaking Wrapped Packages! What are You Waiting For?

Explore a wrapped box each week from now until Christmas. The waiting and anticipation of what God promises for us: hope, peace, joy, and love arrives each week with a new package. Shake, inspect, and guess what is inside!

Week 1: Is it a Jack in the box? (Sunday, November 27, 2011)
“God, I just love new things! This is such a great, wonderful time of the year. It would be so cool God if you could just reach out and rip open the sky and show me the wonder of what is to come!”

Week 2: Is it a new video game? (Sunday, December 4, 2011)
“God, take me on an adventure, at least in my mind I can get away from the reality of today! I will master the levels and challenges – please give me a new game!”

Week 3: Is it a shiny new jacket? (Sunday, December 11, 2011)
“God, this one is kind of soft, the box is long, is it that new jacket? I saw it just the other day in the window, it has the silver bling on the back and faux-fur lining on the hood. Thank you God for giving the new look for the new me!”

Week 4: Is it a set of keys? (Sunday, December 18, 2011)
“God, you have provided me so much. I know you have watched me grow up. I want to feel settled, not like one who wanders around. Did you know I met somebody? Of course you did. I would love to have a place we can call home. A place we can share with others. I could shake this box, but I think I will just put it down, and wait another week to find out.”

Scandalous Jesus: Rule breaking, Love making, Rabble Rousing

Scandalous Jesus
scan· dal· ous
-
Adjective  /ˈskandl-əs/ Causing general public outrage by a perceived offense
against morality or law, e.g., a series of scandalous liaisons.

We’ve domesticated Jesus and too often usurped his message of “God’s kingdom drawing near” in order to build and preserve the empires of self, ego, privilege and power.   We pray and think and sing a whole lot about and to Jesus, but who is Jesus?  What was the essence of his message?  What does he have to say to us today?

Revisit the scandalous life, ministry, words and practices of Jesus; Explore the table-turning, boundary-breaking WAY of loving God, neighbor, enemy and self more fully; and Ask: “is it time our lives, community, and ministry became Scandalous as well?”

In this series, we look more deeply and listen more closely for the Jesus:
