Our Story

Sometimes the pieces just start falling into place before you even realize what is happening. That is our story.

In the summer of 2005 the germ of an idea was planted.  It began as we started searching for a place where we could experience joy and celebrate and praise God in ways that were authentic, relevant and meaningful.  We began asking  questions of friends, acquaintances and total strangers and the first question emerged:

Maybe it is time to do something different in Chicago?

If the first question piqued our interest, the next question kept us up at night:

What is God calling us to be and to do for our community, city and world?

Later that year, we attended the Metropolitan Community Church’s (MCC) global conference in Calgary Canada where, after 3 years and 4,000 interviews the MCC unveiled its vision, values and purpose:

MCC’s are on a bold mission to transform hearts, lives, and history. We are a movement that faithfully proclaims God’s inclusive love for all people and proudly bears witness to the holy integration of spirituality and sexuality. Just as Jesus did, we are called to:

  1. Do justice, show kindness, and live humbly with God. (Micah 6:8)
  2. Explore life’s questions with open hearts and minds.
  3. Raise our voices in sacred defiance against religious (and political or systemic) exclusion.
  4. Reach out to those with no hope.
  5. Lift up new generations of remarkable, far-reaching spiritual activists.

We value Inclusion, Community, Spiritual Transformationand Social Action and as God’s liberated people, we boldly Reclaim our Holy Identity, Advance our call to Social Justice and Action, Tell the story of God’s Transforming Grace, Nurture the value of Community and Build bridges that Liberate and Unite

Perhaps it is time to create a community that lives into this bold vision?

Throughout 2006 we continued to ask questions, to attend community meetings, and to listen to the hopes, dreams and struggles of people who find themselves “over religion” or challenged by prior negative experiences that were unjust, unloving or unwelcoming.

Early in 2007 we began working in the community to confirm the mission and direction of this new, radically organic community and church. We held our first gathering on Palm Sunday 2007, located our offices at the Center on Halsted and worked in the community to bring together 12 faith communities to celebrate the spiritual diversity of our community in a way that had not been done before.  In 2008 the congregation elected its first board, affirmed the Pastor and became the 1st church of the MCC’s 2nd generation by affiliating as an MCC on the 40th anniversaryof the founding of the Metropolitan Community Churches (October 6, 1968).

Today, aChurch4Me? MCC  celebrates worship each Sunday morning at 11am in Overdier Hall, 1545 W. Morse Ave, Chicago, IL 60626.  We are a growing movement and a radically diverse congregation where you are welcomed and celebrated as a unique and wonderful child of our Creator.  No matter where you have been or find yourself on your life and spiritual journey – You ARE WELCOMED AND CELEBRATED IN THIS PLACE!
